HOPITAL MILITAIRE - WESTLAND SHOPPING

Passenger numbers on route 53 vary considerably depending on the route section: they are very high between Neder-over-Heembeek and Bockstael, and much lower between Bockstael and Liebrecht. Overcrowding on the Bockstael - Hôpital Militaire section fully justifies the use of higher capacity vehicles. The current route between UZ Brussel [University Hospital Brussels] and Dieleghem is inappropriate to the needs of the residents in the Liebrecht and Dieleghem districts and does not require articulated buses. Moreover, there is currently no direct connecting service between Neder-Over-Heembeek and the west of Brussels, which is a weak point in the network.

New route

The new number 53 service will operate a new route between Bockstael and the Westland Shopping centre in Anderlecht, taking the route of the current number 49 bus route. The Bockstael – Dieleghem route section will now be covered by the number 88 bus which will serve Dieleghem and Liebrecht before terminating at UZ Brussel [University Hospital Brussels].

  • A major new circular route connecting Neder-Over-Heembeek and the west of the Brussels Region;
  • New direct journey route to the Westland Shopping centre from the districts of Mettewie, Basilique, De Smet De Naeyer and Bockstael;
  • Higher capacity (articulated) buses to provide more seating and improved comfort.
